4 Tips From A Medical Doctor To Protect Your Kidneys While Using Anabolic Steroids

Kidney damage while using anabolic steroids is NOT common. On the other hand, I see lowered eGFR all the time in our community. What is going on?

I have low eGFR, does that mean my kidneys are damaged?

eGFR is a measure of the kidney's ability to filtrate creatinine from the bloodstream. Higher creatinine means lower eGFR and is therefor assumed to be a predictor for kidney health.

For a young and healthy individual, we expect the eGFR to be higher than 90.

Creatinine is generally high when you have higher muscle mass, train hard or use creatine supplements. In these cases there is probably no reason to be alarmed when your eGFR is low. In some cases more examinations are approriate. For example when you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, genetic predisposition, or symptoms of renal insufficiency.

Do I have a higher risk for developing kidney damage?

As a medical doctor I help you to make the right decisions regarding the use of anabolic steroids and performance enhancing drugs. I do this by detailing your medical history and whether your family members have indicators of hightened risk for high blood pressure or kidney disease

4 tips to lower your risk for kidney damage while using anabolic steroids.

  1. Keep your blood pressure below 135/80, measured by a high-quality upper-arm blood pressure monitor.
  2. Make sure you do regular bloodwork and check your eGFR. If it is severely lowered (<60) or if you are a very muscled athlete (>100kg) I would consider adding a cystatin C measurement to your blood work panel.
  3. Another option is to check forprotein and glucose in your urine by urineanalysis.
  4. Lower your dosages and refrain from using boldenone and, potentially, nandrolone as well.
Although boldenone is often seen as particulary damaging for the kidneys, high-quality evidence is lacking in humans. Still, there are safer options than boldenone which would be better candidates in a harm reduction strategy.
