Are your testosterone levels too low?
Your testosterone levels decrease as you age. This can lead to erectile problems, fatigue, or loss of muscle mass. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can alleviate these symptoms, improve your quality of life, and prevent age-related diseases. However, a testosterone deficiency can occur at any age. Testosterone is an important male sex hormone. It is responsible for maintaining cognition and mood, sexual functions, bone density, muscle mass and strength, fat distribution, and more. It is essential for muscles, skin, bones, the brain, prostate, and erections. Therefore, sufficient testosterone is important for a good quality of life.
Your testosterone production can decrease for various reasons. This often causes the following symptoms:
- Less energy and motivation
- Reduced sex drive and poorer erections
- Decreased muscle strength and muscle mass
- Increase in body fat and more abdominal fat
- Weakened bones and cardiovascular disease
- Reduced body hair
- Depressive feelings
Testosterone therapy can help reduce these symptoms.
Do you recognize these symptoms?
Testosterone therapy (TRT) is primarily for men:
- with low testosterone (hypogonadism)
- who have used anabolic steroids
- with osteoporosis or anemia
- with erectile dysfunction or reduced libido
- Men with low energy or motivation
Testosterone therapy is not suitable for everyone. Do you plan to have children? Do you have prostate or breast cancer, urinary tract issues, clotting problems, or have had a heart or brain infarction? In these cases extra caution is needed and personalized advice is necessary.
You can choose testosterone treatment for various reasons, amongst which:
- improved libido
- improving your energy levels
- improving your muscle mass and strength
- improved mood
- because of a medical condition
Your symptoms may have other causes than testosterone deficiency. Therefore, it is important to seek proper advice.
We conduct a blood test to rule out underlying health issues and to measure your testosterone.
Together, we will go over the results, I will answer your questions, and provide advice. If necessary, I will prescribe testosterone or other medications.
You get started with the feedback, advice, and any medication. We will stay in touch through WhatsApp and schedule a follow-up consultation to monitor your progress.
I'd love to help you too.
GET IN TOUCHTestosterone deficiency is treated in the Netherlands in two ways. Both options have advantages and disadvantages. Together, we will decide which treatment is best for you. In both cases, you will need to administer the medication yourself, so there is no need to visit a clinic. Of course, I will provide detailed guidance during the consultations on how to do this properly.
Treating testosterone deficiency with gel
With this method, you apply a testosterone-containing gel to your body. This causes your testosterone levels to rise quickly. However, they also drop quickly, so you need to apply the gel daily.
Treating testosterone deficiency with injections
Another way to increase your testosterone levels is through injections. You inject a testosterone liquid into your body. Most men choose to inject it into the buttock or thigh. Both Sustanon (a short-acting form of testosterone) and Nebido (a long-acting form) are available.
FREYR works with testosterone gel and injections (both short- and long-acting). I do not work with testosterone in capsules, patches, or implants.
Started TRT on your own?
Did you buy testosterone yourself? I can help you determine the right dosage and inform you of factors to consider. Age, body fat percentage, and the method of administration all affect the dosage of testosterone that I recommend. Additionally, I help you monitor your health through medical tests to ensure your testosterone use is as safe as possible.
Treatment duration
The treatment duration is at least 3 months. Sometimes, it can take up to 12 months to achieve the maximum effect. Some symptoms often improve quickly, such as your libido. You continue treatment as long as you see fit. Other symptoms, however, may take longer to improve. If there is insufficient effect, we can adjust or stop the treatment. We will discuss this during the follow-up consultations.
Testosterone levels
The appropriate testosterone dosage varies from person to person. There is no one-size-fits-all. During consultations, we will determine the testosterone levels needed to alleviate your symptoms.
Whether you are prescribed testosterone or purchase your own, medical check-ups are important. In the Netherlands, personal use of self-purchased testosterone is tolerated by the government. As a doctor, I assist with the self-use of testosterone, as well.
A medical check-up consists of a blood test followed by a consultation. The first medical check-up takes place 3 months after starting testosterone. After that, once a year is often sufficient.
During these medical check-ups, a number of questions are central:
- Are you satisfied with the treatment?
- Do you experience side-effects?
- Do any abnormalities appear in the blood test?
- Are there other factors at play, such as a condition, that are relevant to the treatment?
I offer a new concept in the Netherlands: online consultations with a doctor who helps you map your health and guides you through testosterone therapy. That's why it's important to know the following.
Referral from your general practitioner
You do not need a referral from your general practitioner or specialist to be helped by me. You can always turn to me with questions about testosterone and testosterone therapy (TRT), even if your GP is unable or unwilling to assist you.
Reimbursement/Insurance
I do not have agreements with health insurers. This allows me to spend more time with you and better meet your needs. This way, I can provide the best possible personal approach to everyone interested.
When I prescribe testosterone, the medication will be reimbursed by your health insurance. However, you will first have to pay your deductible if you haven’t used it yet. For 2024, the minimum deductible set by the government is €385, but you may personally have agreed on a higher amount.
Everyone is different. Therefore, my advice, treatments, and assessments are tailored to each individual. What is the goal of FREYR? To help men gain clarity about their health and how to improve it.
A personalized treatment plan with testosterone or other medications tailored to your goals and health
Blood tests and medical advice to rule out any underlying health issues.
Most side effects seen with testosterone therapy (TRT) are avoidable. As a doctor, I am up to date with the latest developments in this field and optimize the treatment to ensure you get the most benefit.
You will be assisted by a medical doctor who specializes in male hormones and TRT, and maintain accessible communication.
If required, I will prescribe testosterone, but also other medications. These include medications that improve your health, such as those for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and more.
